Mission Statement  –

“AFDC COALITION  IS AN ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION THAT PROMOTES PUBLIC POLICY TO IMPROVE THE  LIVES OF ALL COLORADANS LIVING IN POVERTY”

SCOPE IS?

created in 1991 when I came here

9 to 5 became the chief organizing group

self-determination staff support came from them through Bridget

not as much a coalition as a network of organizations  NETWORK brings together a lot of different groups and structures addressing poverty

PEOPLE FIRST

AFDC refers to Aid to Families with dependent children

expanded to people who are living in poverty

State officals said that the name is not the same

EXERCISE:   give everyone one and everyone two blanks

2 parts

Pink  issue program

is that issue or program central to what we are doing or far removed from primary core

going far and wide in rings away from the core everyone is up there together except ____ yours truly

green sheet issues that are not in the circles on the wall

$15.00 minimum wage in NEW YORK STATE Governor is endorsing. How would that be possible here in Colorado?

this is an exciting exericse but it is too broad to consider the infrastructure of what we are up to

COORDINATE WHAT WE ARE DOING

financial education  how to make it in the world that we see and face in this day and age

core issues are related to all people who live in poverty

segments of the population who have special needs

other groups who are out in the midst of change

mental health america

CHARG

VULNERABLE POPULATIONS  not low-income

abuse  trafficking GLBTQ  POVERTY BROAD TERM

HOW AFDC WORKS:

“THE AFDC COALITION USES NETWORKING TO EDUCATE, STRATEGIZE, LOBBY, SUPPORT, and INFORM ALL COALITION MEMBERS ON ISSUES IMPACTING LOW-INCOME FAMILIES”

NAN  taking over PUBLIC POLICY  federal level  state and local rules and regulations  BILL PASSING AND THEN IT IS IMPLEMENTED AND RULES ARE IN A FORM THAT AGREE WITH THE LEGISLATION.

AUGUST 1996  Clinton signed TANF in LAW

Senate Bill 120 on TANF  modify and address TANF Identify legislation that has an impact on mission statement.

Laurie Harvey was reviewing  and publishing the rules

What is the role of the network of agencies and individuals

regular membership size is 100’s

few people from either the state or the counties

What does membership mean?

direct service providers working on policy

running around finding people to talk to is a serious issue

economic opportunity poverty reduction task force

distill issues that we can throw our support behind and work on campaigns that are successful that are effective

how to mobilize those who have no clout

more required if you want to figure out issues that we need to be proactive about?

BIG casting call break out sub task forces subject areas new ideas what was not going well

dredge up potential legislation that can be successful.

constituents were coming up with themselves

hearing people’s voices and what they see are issues  champions none anymore OH I am not that sure about this.

hunt for and cultivate the next group of champions and agencies those advocates of the advocates

WHO is in charge  making friends making connections making sure that they are serving our issues and representing us.

Common Good Caucus

BOYD WAS AMONG THIS GROUP  Catholic Charities Northern Senator Kefalas

Jennifer Corrigan     had a conflict state Human Services
