A True Warrior of the Spirit – Rosa la Bayamesa

#tdih October 10, 1868, marks the beginning of the Ten Years’ War in the fight for Cuban independence from Spain. Rosa la Bayamesa, who had had been freed from slavery, provided healthcare to those wounded in battle — using homemade medicines in makeshift, clandestine hospitals. Young people can learn about Cuba’s struggle for independence in Margarita Engle‘s “The Surrender Tree,” a book (in English and Spanish) of historical fiction in free verse based on the life of Captain Rosa la Bayamesa: http://bit.ly/1Zo3jj2 Image: Monument to Rosa la Bayamesa in Cuba.
