The Mayor’s Commission to End Homelessness:  from Day One We All Served at the Discretion of the Sitting Major

“But Parvensky says the commission (the Denver Homeless Commission) is no longer driving policy decisions within the city.
“It’s not part of the strategic planning process for determining how city resources are devoted to address homelessness,” Parvensky said. “At this point in time, I don’t believe the commission is effective.” “

I’m a commissioner and have served for the entire time that the 10 year plan has existed. I am, not certain when and how the Commission was ever fully effective or even a semblance of responsive to the growing demands of a society that increasingly has had people who are at risk in the city and surrounding regions. We knew perfectly well that the Mayor’s office called the shots and we served “at the will of those leaders throughout the planning and development of the 7 goals for prevention and ending the duration and extent of homeless people being at risk. We served one another much more than any plan and to that end much has been accomplished that flies in the face of this provocative statement. As I iterated at the last Commission meeting, the assembled leaders saved many lives and redirected many others including mine. Still this refrain has been repeated over the years since the beginning. I feel it does us a disservice to revile the current circumstances without realizing from whence we have come.
